These instructions apply to EQ when it is installed as a desktop application, using a local area network (LAN) to share data. It does not apply to remote servers or any hosted EQ Flex software.
By default all new installations of EQ will point to the folder c:\easyquote\data and create new databases there. Any any point after EQ has been installed and activated you are able to change the file locations to use a different database. If you are part of a company which has EQ data on a local server you may have data shared on your network and EQ needs to be configured to point to your existing data folder.
Note: Changing data locations does NOT move or transfer any data. If you have previously saved data into EQ consult EQ support before changing file locations otherwise you may lose access to that existing data.
How to change file locations within the EQ application
- Open EQ and login as a user with permission to open System Config
If this is the first time you have run EQ the password box should be left blank, then click OK.
- Click System Config on the top toolbar:
- Under System click File Locations to show this screen:
If you have an existing copy of EQ, connected to shared data, you should copy the settings from that EQ and enter the same settings here.
- Click the More Options (...) button to locate the folders.
Do NOT change the Temporary Work folder. This should remain within the installation folder as shown in the screenshot.
- Click Update to save and close System Config.
- Close EQ.
- Re-open EQ. If you have connected an older version of EQ, the first time you connect to shared data, it may offer an upgrade icon on your desktop. This is to ensure that all connected versions are the same. Follow the prompt to run the upgrade if shown.
Otherwise you can login to EQ (this would be using the password for your user in the shared data).
Your EQ installation is now connected to your shared data.
These instructions are intended for IT professionals and advanced users. Users of EQ should otherwise not make changes to the settings file here. Incorrect settings risk losing your data.
The file easyquote.ini exists on every local installation of EQ. It stores the main 4 file locations that you would otherwise change in System Settings here:
Instead of working inside EQ, you can quickly change those file locations by editing the file easyquote.ini.
To locate and edit easyquote.ini:
- Locate your EQ desktop shortcut and right-click on it to select Open File Location.
(Or if EQ is installed in the default location, use Your PC to open the folder C:\Program Files (x86)\Easyquote4)
- In the folder Easyquote4 you will see a file called easyquote.ini. Double-click this to open it.
If Windows asks how to open it, select the program Notepad.
- The default easyquote.ini file will either be empty or look like this:
(If it is blank, it also means EQ will use the default locations, shown in the image).
- You can enter new folder locations by typing into this file.
To avoid typing errors, try to copy and paste the folder path from Windows into this file.
EQ will work with mapped network drives or full UNC file paths beginning with \\. So long as Windows Explorer can access the folder, then you can paste that path into this file.
The 4 lines could be presented in any sequence. They are:
DATAPATH = Data location in System Config
TMPWORK = Temporary work, should usually be a local folder on C:\ drive
FILES = Work files in System Config (usually the folder one level above DATA)
CATALOGUES = Catalogues in System Config (must be identical to DATAPATH)
- When you are finished, save the file and close Notepad.
